Explorathon is a program designed to expand the horizons of girls in science, technology and mathematics. The goal of EXPLORATHON 2012 is to involve, inform and connect middle school and high school girls with area practitioners for a hands-on experience in diverse scientific fields.

  • DISCOVER the opportunities and support available in your preferred career paths

  • CONNECT with 60 women professionals sharing their experience and perspectives

  • EXPAND your career options, along with 900 other metro area young women

  • LINK with camps, companies, corporations, non-profits and universities

  • INVESTIGATE careers and courses at 3 hands-on workshops

  • STRATEGIZE on scholarships and internships

  • FOCUS on your future career options!

EXPLORATHON targets a diverse population from the tri-county area of metro Detroit. Participants represent over 40 different school districts including Detroit; the northern suburbs of Fenton, Orion, and Rochester; the western suburbs of West Bloomfield and Waterford; eastern suburbs of Macomb County; southern suburbs such as Lincoln Park, and Riverview.  Students come from public schools, parochial schools, charter schools and private schools.  Provisions are made to accept students with disabilities and those in wheel chairs. Many minorities are represented: African American, Asian, Middle Eastern, Hispanic and ESL students. All are welcome.

The day begins with a keynote speaker followed by three break-out sessions.  Lunch is provided, and the conference concludes by 1:30 PM so that school buses can return to their respective districts in time for district dismissal.

EXPLORATHON 2012 is a joint project of AAUW Birmingham (MI) Branch, Cranbrook Institute of Science, and Detroit Country Day School.
